Despite the increasing discussions about gender equality and diversity in recent years, women and diverse individuals are still underrepresented in nearly every area of film production—both in front of and behind the camera.

Overcoming the Gender Pay Gap

The study “Women in Culture and Media” has shown that the gender pay gap in the cultural sector is 24%, with the gap being even wider in directing and dramaturgy, reaching 36%.

Fair conditions in front of and behind the camera

ProQuote Film advocates for fair conditions both in front of and behind the camera to promote balanced representation and fair working conditions within the film industry.

Making Film Heritage Gender-Equitable

The history of cinema has typically been narrated by the male pioneers and icons of the industry. Therefore, at ProQuote Film, we have launched a new film series that honors and highlights the significant contributions of female filmmakers* in (German-speaking) film history.

There are currently few or insufficient data to capture gender ratios and diversity in the film industry. This also makes it difficult to develop funding measures aimed at promoting equal opportunities and inclusion.

ProQuote Film advocates for a balanced representation in the selection committees of funding bodies within the film industry. The aim is to promote gender equality and diversity.

Since its founding in 2014, ProQuote has already accomplished a great deal. At that time, the proportion of female directors for public broadcasters was 12%. An outcry was sorely needed – and then things really took off.

Feminist Time Travel: GENDERNAUTS

The next Feminist Time Travel Screening is coming up and will take place as part of Dokumentale 2025!

At the turn of the millennium, Monika Treut travels to the land of the new genders and explores the transgender phenomenon. She introduces us to a group of fascinating artists in San Francisco: gender-mixers and sexual cyborgs who change their bodies with the help of new technologies and biochemistry. In intimate interviews and everyday situations, we learn how hormones, medicine and social norms cement the idea of masculinity and femininity. But the gendernauts travel through the worlds of sexuality like cosmonauts through space and cybernauts through net culture, bringing the binary gender categories crashing down. Gendernauts is a captivating portrait of a queer community and an early filmic testimony to the gender debates that are still relevant today.
